This is the continuation and expansion of our previous Collaborative Research Development projects "CRDPJ 412640-11" and "CRDPJ 381693-09" for the development of thermodynamic databases for the steelmaking de-phosphorization process and mold fluxes. The demand for high alloy high strength steels is increasing to reduce the weight of automobiles. In order to understand the complex chemical reactions between the slag, metal, refractories, inclusions, mold flux and gases during the production of high alloy steels, accurate thermodynamic knowledge of related systems is a necessary prerequisite. In this new 3-year project, the thermodynamic database developed from the two previous CRD projects will be expanded to include ZrO2, TiOx, VOx, B2O3, MnO and CrOx to the CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3-FeO-Fe2O3-Na2O-K2O-Li2O-(F) system. In addition, the liquid steel database will be expanded to high alloy systems in order to deal with refining impurities like O, N, S, P, and C during the steelmaking process. To apply the thermodynamic databases to industrial processes, a simple process simulation model will be developed for each step of the secondary steelmaking process. This project will be carried out in collaboration with our previous and new partners (three Canadian partners: Rio Tinto-QIT, Nucor Steel, and RHI, and 6 non-Canadian partners: Posco, Hyundai Steel, Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metals Corp., JFE Steel, Voestalpine and Tata Steel). The industrial partners will evaluate and provide feedback on the thermodynamic database and process model. In addition, they will also provide valuable in-house process data or operation knowledge for process simulation model developments. Results of the project will be used to improve the industrial steelmaking process for conventional and new high alloy steels. At a larger scale, this study will be useful to general pyrometallurgy, cement, glassmaking and combustion industries as well as to the geological community.
