This project is about developing and enabling new software that enhances the capacity of engineering consultants to identify and map potentially unstable slopes in North America's western interior plains. The software is called R-WAUS: Region-Wide Assessment of Unstable Slopes. It serves an important gap in the methodology for assessing potentially unstable slopes across a broad region during the early planning stages of mega-projects like pipelines. As a screening tool, the software supports a variety of objectives: (a) identify slopes requiring detailed geotechnical analysis; (b) constrain route selections for proposed infrastructure (e.g., future roads and pipelines); and/or (c) assess risk for existing infrastructure. Through research collaboration with Golder Associates - one of Canada's leading geotechnical engineering consulting firms - we will design, build and test R-WAUS so that it achieves a balance between the expert knowledge of users and the algorithms that identify potentially unstable slopes.
