Fiber optics is now the integral part of the internet and long-distance telecommunication. Without it we would not enjoy the benefits of high-speed internet, or low-rate international telephone calls. Typically a fiber optic communication system consists of many opto-electronic components such as laser, modulators, optical fibers, amplifiers and photo-detectors. As an optical pulse propagates in a fiber, it broadens due to chromatic dispersion and hence, it interferes with the neighboring symbol leading to performance degradations. In addition, fiber optic system is a nonlinear system, i.e. when two color components copropagate in a fiber, their nonlinear interaction generates another color. In this research program, efficient semi-analytical and numerical tools will be developed to model the nonlinear fiber optic system.
