The incubation and development of Lake Whitefish for commercial purposes in the Collège Boréal laboratory

The two main objectives in the present study will be to incubate wild Lake Whitefish eggs and raise them to fingerling size in the natural resources hatchery at Collège Boréal. In the fall f 2015, the Lake Whitefish fingerlings will be transported to the aquaculture cages of Open Water Systems Ltd on Manitoulin Island, Ontario. The company will raise the Lake Whitefish in their offshore fish farming equipment until they are harvested for market in the fall of 2016. To date, the egg incubation, fry and fingerling rearing has only been accomplished for stocking purposes, and has yet to be attempted in a laboratory setting for commercial use in Canada. Through the partnership, the company will have a procedure for producing Lake Whitefish fingerlings to supply a grow-out commercial fish farm.
