Stand-alone and grid-connected photovoltaic systems are, in large measure, comprised of an ensemble of off-the-shelf components, borrowed from a variety of other technological settings. The critical assessment as to whether or not these components are really appropriate for the photovoltaic environment has yet to be performed. This assessment could be performed within the framework of a software tool aimed at examining the "flow of energy" within such photovoltaic systems.
