Significant progress has been made in the development of Autonomous Vehicle (AV) which relies on sensors, control hardware and software to navigate without input from humans. Self-driving cars, for example, could be available to market by 2020. Current AVs being tested on streets are facing several challenges particularly in adverse weather due to heavy reliance on weather-dependent sensors and onboard maps. Investigation of robust (precise and reliable) position and orientation determination technologies using weather-independent and self-contained navigation sensors, such as Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Inertial Navigation System (INS), in integration with weather-dependent sensors, can help resolve this challenge.
