With the growing number of IoT devices (50 billion expected by 2020), the development of next-generation IoT services and applications must include more precise positioning information and higher availability. Such capabilities are crucial for positioning and navigation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in confined environments, connecting self-driving cars in intelligent transportation systems, and geo-referencing of smartphones for mobile mapping. Current precise systems are based on high-grade global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and inertial navigation systems (INS). However, these are large in size and too expensive for most IoT mobile devices that are equipped with low-cost GNSS and inertial sensors due to space and cost constraints. This project is a joint submission under the international collaborations program with the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of Taiwan with academic and industrial collaborators in both countries. It aims at developing a new integrated GNSS/INS system to enable high availability precise positioning using low-cost GNSS and MEMS inertial sensors for IoT mobile devices. A novel GNSS augmentation system architecture will be developed to facilitate precise positioning insensitive to precision augmentation signal outages. Combined with new inter-aiding and error mitigation methodologies for GNSS and inertial sensors, high availability continuous navigation solutions become obtainable in adverse environments. Such a system can be applied as an embedded solution for a wide range of IoT mobile devices from smartphones, tablets, and UAVs, to emerging driverless cars.
