The research program to be supported at University of Victoria includes broad areas of optical communications, with a current emphasis on three focal areas of terahertz photonics: terahertz sources and detectors, guided wave terahertz technology, and novel terahertz systems and instruments. Research into terahertz sources and detectors has the long-term objective of increasing the bandwidth and dynamic range of affordable and easy to use terahertz instruments. Guided wave terahertz technology offers the possibility of replacing large, high loss and cumbersome optical terahertz components with small, compact, and mechanically stable components. Novel terahertz systems and instruments are required to overcome the high cost and complexity of analysis at these frequencies.
