Terahertz technology has progressed from a research curiosity to a potentially valuable alternative modality for a variety of imaging, sensing, diagnostic, and communications applications. Recently developed devices and techniques provide a wide range of researchers with the ability to generate and detect electromagnetic radiation in this previously inaccessible portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (0.1 to 10 terahertz), driving an explosion of research and commercial activity. Terahertz waves offer high resolution and penetrate numerous dielectric materials, providing a safe and powerful imaging capability. Terahertz frequencies correspond to specific vibrational signatures of complex molecules, enabling identification of substances of interest in pharmacology, resources, and biomedicine.
