3D Printing and Biofabrication Instrument

We propose the purchase of a unique 3D Bioprinting Instrument that will enable the twelve investigators associated with this proposal as well as other researchers from the University of Toronto and its associated teaching hospitals, from York University and from Ryerson University to routinely bio-print tissue models based on human cells and a variety of extracellular matrix materials ("bio-inks"). The instrument will uniquely complement our team's expertise related to (a) the development of next generation of microfabricated bio-printheads and bioprinter cartridges, (b) the formulation of bio-inks and characterization of their gelation behavior, (c) the biomaterial degradation behavior and biomechanical properties of bioprinted soft materials and tissues, and (d) the in vitro characterization of tissue models. Our research goal is the systematic validation of bio-printed soft materials that contain multiple co-localized cell populations and recapitulate important functional characteristics associated with intact tissues.
