The magnetic method is a widely-used geophysical surveying technique used to map broad geological trends and detect ore bodies. It is applied at different scales from large national territories to small prospective mining properties. To meet these different demands, magnetometers are deployed from a variety of platforms. They can be mounted on fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters for airborne operations, towed behind ships, and carried in backpacks by ground crews. A recent development is the use of light-weight magnetometers on unmanned air vehicles (UAVs). GEM Systems, the industrial partner involved in this project, has developed a magnetometer for the UAV market, the GSMP-35UAV.
