The subtropical bottle gourd and luffa gourd cucurbits are grown for their immature fruits as vegetables. Both bottle and luffa gourds are not locally grown in Ontario. However, all major Canadian food markets including: Loblaw, Metro Inc, and Walmart carry these vegetables in their stores. The present project is aimed to introduce bottle and luffa gourds to the Canadian agriculture for domestic and international market consumption. Canada has a temperate environment and other cucurbits, such as pumpkin, squash and cucumber are successfully grown, suggesting that bottle and luffa gourds could be introduced into Canadian agriculture as well.
