英文摘要
The focus of this research program is to develop organic molecules and materials that respond to light by changing their structures and properties, and subsequently performing important functions 'on-command'. In this program, we will use light and photoresponsive molecules to: 1 - act as biocatalyst cofactors and influence the outcome of biochemical reactions, 2 - release small 'caged' molecules and therapeutics on command, 3 - report on the success of a release event and the progress of a chemical reaction, 4 - regulate the photothermal release of small molecules from the surface of metal nanoparticles 5 - regulate other thermal reactions such as re-mending of self-healing polymers, and 6 - act as sensors for chemical toxins and detectors for genes. This proposal describes how photoresponsive molecules based on well-known molecular architectures change their shape when stimulated with light. Because the shape of a molecule dictates how it reacts or interacts with others (whether in a chemical reaction or biochemical system), the molecules and materials developed in the program will be examined for their ability to catalyze biochemical reactions, act as photo-delivery vehicles and sensors, and control the bulk properties of macroscopic materials.
