Erosion-corrosion of materials used to construct liquid pipelines and slurry systems results in the major cause of financial losses and downtime in power and resource industries. The proposed approach uses new techniques to improve measurement of the material loss rate in jet impingement tests. A set-up will be designed to investigate erosion-corrosion phenomena in micro-scale, to distinguish elemental contributions to erosion corrosion in-situ. For the first time, the microstructure of pipeline steels will be correlated to their surface activities, scar development at different stages of erosion-corrosion, and localized electron transfer rates to gain insight into the mechanism. Array electrodes will be constructed to measure the non-uniformity of distributions of anodic current densities over a wear scar as a function of time for steels with a range of microstructures. Effects of local hydrodynamic parameters will be determined to investigate the mechanism through their contributions to erosion-corrosion over scars. A new erosion-corrosion map will be built to demonstrate the metallurgical effects on the erosion-corrosion mechanism transitions of materials. The controlling factors for erosion-corrosion and mechanisms under different prevailing conditions will be determined. A new model will be developed to more accurately predict the effects of hydrodynamic conditions, mechanical properties and metallurgical features of the materials on corrosion-enhanced erosion. Thus, the proposed work will advance the knowledge of the processes that are synergistic within erosion-corrosion, insights into the mechanisms, and development of data to enable industry to better address the present problems arising in industry from erosion-corrosion.
Short and longer term objectives will lead to guidelines for establishing criteria for selecting materials for slurry systems and equipment design, developing new erosion-corrosion resistant materials, and optimizing operating conditions to control erosion-corrosion. That will enable industry to more safely operate equipment containing corrosive liquids and erosive materials, reduce downtime and hence reduce operating costs.
