In this proposal, we seek to make innovations in energy efficiency of smartphones. Though modern processors, displays, and communication interfaces are designed with low-power states, software can play an important role in reducing the power used on handheld devices and extend their battery life. Therefore, we will focus on the following objectives: Objective O1: Develop optimization models of the power and energy demand of commonly used software applications on handheld devices. The models will serve as benchmarks to evaluate energy saving strategies and techniques. Smartphone makers need to know the power and energy demands of application programs to compute battery life. Moreover, users can make decisions about whether to minimally run some applications. Objective O2: Develop high-level task scheduling algorithms and communication protocols to optimize the energy costs of applications. High-level tasks include data communication tasks, selection of radio interfaces, computation tasks, storage tasks, display tasks, and user interactions. Research results show that selection and ordering of those high-level tasks indeed have much impact on power and energy cost of applications. Objective O3: Develop methodologies for test space reduction and automated performance testing of power and energy costs of software applications. Since testing for energy performance is a time consuming process, there is a need for developing methodologies for reducing the test space and automating the process of energy performance testing. This will reduce the time to evaluate applications and shorten the time to integrate new applications with smartphones. Benefits to Canada: Considering the tremendous global market potential of smartphones, it is important that Canada sustains its leadership in this field. The proposed research will help Canada achieve that goal by developing novel research results and training highly qualified graduate and undergraduate students.
