英文摘要
Communication systems play an important role in achieving sustainability by allowing access to information when and where it is needed. For example, a manufacturing facility can accelerate its production when nearby wind farm is generating large amount of electricity, and reduces its production when there is a reduction of electricity generated. Similarly, flow of goods is monitored during transportation and storage, whereabouts of these can be updated instantly, this information can reduce the cost of storage and assist companies in achieving lean manufacturing. There are many such applications to communication systems, however, the cost of wireless networking, which includes cost of bandwidth, equipment, infrastructure and maintenance, is a hindrance for vast deployment of such networks. That's is why more research is needed to reduce the cost of wireless communication systems to achieve an economical cost for businesses and governments. Innovation in this research will allow real-time deployment of wireless sensor and ad hoc networks and will reduce the infrastructure cost of deployment with efficient network protocols and architectures.
Another area that can significantly benefit from wireless communication systems is vehicular systems, where a vehicular network can provide safety, emergency, roadside information to the passenger and driver. With this, number of accidents, and severity of the accidents will be significantly reduced, which translates in to economic gains and improved standard of living. Innovation in this research will be in designing more reliable receivers and medium access control protocols such that the vehicles can exchange necessary information on time. The other innovation that we provide with this research is to designing network protocols that reduce the infrastructure cost by utilizing radios on the vehicles to form efficient and effective networks in highly mobile environments. By this, the network won't require large infrastructure to provide necessary safety, emergency and roadside information.
In the long term, above mentioned research will contribute to achieving cost effective, efficient, and reliable wireless ad hoc networks, wireless sensor networks, and vehicular ad hoc networks.
