Background: With numerous applications for microdevices in communication, automotive, and biomedical industries, static and dynamic characterization of these devices play significant role for effective design and further development. While comprehensive characterization of microdevices is performed with stroboscopic interferometry, bioimaging and other material NDT are now performed by Low Coherence Interferometry. One successful application of LCI is Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), invented in early 1990s as a high resolution noninvasive and non-contact biomedical imaging. Proposed Research: The overall aim of the proposed research program is to exploit optical interferometry for static, dynamic and surface characterization of microdevices and to non-destructively evaluate bio and other engineering materials for non-visual defects. In the proposed research, an acousto optic modulated stroboscopic interferometer, together with a non-mechanical means of phase shifting will be developed to enable instantaneous phase shifting for such characterization. Since the required phases are captured instantaneously, the cameras can be timed to capture multiple images at regular intervals. This eliminates the need for a specific electronic control device, making the measurement process simpler. For bioimaging and NDT of engineering materials, a line field reflective optics based low coherence interferometer will be developed to increase speed and reduce the errors due to lens aberration and scanning distortion. Potential impact: The potential impact of the project can be felt in applications related to aerospace, microelectronic, and biomedical industries in Material Characterization and NDT; and Bioimaging. The proposed LCI together with stroboscopic interferometry will provide the platform for successful building of a novel stroboscopic low coherence interferometer for in-vivo imaging of transient biological processes where motion artifacts have been a significant challenge.
