项目摘要

Training strategies to meet the challenges imposed by a changing climate: Preparing for societal impacts and adaptation. This proposal outlines a plan to develop a post-graduate training strategy designed to prepare graduate students to address the impacts of climate change. Our long-term objectives are to become a permanent centre of excellence in interdisciplinary climate change research and graduate student training in the Atlantic Canadian region, in order to respond to and anticipate the needs of academia, government and industry as adaptation and mitigation strategies become dominant themes in the area of climate change science. Cumulatively, our team members collectively focus on at least areas identified as national priorities by the Science, Technology and Innovation Council (STIC). Our training strategy emphasizes training opportunities that are rooted in systems science, inter-relationships between systems, measurement approaches, processes, modeling, practical experiences, communication, and cross-over opportunities with industry and government. The composition and characteristics of the group make it an ideal host for innovative training of capable "Climate Science Practitioners", who will be capable of playing a role in identifying, developing and implementing solutions to critical and societal issues such as climate change where immediate response is required in the form of theoretically and technically sound solutions.
