This research program aims at building synthetic molecular transporters able to target and penetrate specific cells. As such, it will provide innovative solutions for the specific delivery of drugs and diagnostic agents to their site of action.
Currently, we are not able to direct drugs to their site of action. This limitation imposes the use of large doses, added side effects and increased costs. Additionally, many drugs have difficulty reaching their target when the latter is located intracellularly.
The proposed program will first provide new molecular transporters able to recognize cellular fingerprints in the form of cell surface glycosaminoglycans. The transporters will then import a cargo molecule inside the selected cells. The proposed research program will also generate a wealth of knowledge on the chemical space of the cellular surface, which will be valuable for cellular biology and drug delivery.
It combines organic & medicinal chemistry, cellular biology, and biophysics, and will contribute to the interdisciplinary training of highly qualified personnel.
