In recent years, quantum information science has advanced rapidly, with quantum cryptography systems already commercially available. These systems are an example of quantum channels, serving mainly to distribute quantum information. There is a significant effort underway to combine these quantum channels with quantum nodes that would offer basic memory, processing and routing capability. The combination of these channels and nodes would create a fully quantum network, enabling applications simply impossible today. Quantum networks connecting simple quantum processing nodes are also a promising architecture for a scalable quantum computer.
For most of the decade, implementations of quantum channels and nodes based on atoms and optical photons have led in terms of performance and achievement. This is now changing with the advent of circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) and microwave quantum optics (MQO), where microwave photons on-chip interact strongly with "artificial atoms" made from superconducting qubits.
My proposed research program will explore and exploit cQED tools with particular emphasis on what has become known as MQO. My research will focus both on answering fundamental physical questions as well as developing technology for quantum networks, laying their foundations. The program will have two major themes: 1) Propagating Nonclassical Microwave States and 2) Photonic Quantum Memories and Interfaces.
The successful development and application of cQED and MQO would have a significant impact on communications and information technology in the next decade. For instance, a hybrid quantum interface would be a breakthrough technology, allowing for the combination of the best approaches from various fields of quantum information. Along with the quantum interface, the quantum nodes developed in this project will lay the foundations of future quantum network technology, with the potential to revolutionize information technology in the 21st century.
