项目摘要

The eye literally presents a window into the health of the body. This is because the eye offers direct views of: (1) diseases that affect vision and (2) diseases that affect a person's general health. An example of an eye-specific disease is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)--the leading cause of blindness in Western societies. A systemic diseases that affects the eye is Diabetic Retinopathy (DR). Both diseases cause visible changes to the blood vessel networks in the retina and can thus be diagnosed, measured, and tracked via non-invasive ophthalmoscopic imaging. With this in mind, Annidis Health Systems Inc. of Ottawa has created an advanced, 'multi-spectral' ophthalmoscope: the RHA(TM). This instrument is the result of a decade's research with Canada's leading ocular science institutions: University of Ottawa Eye Institute, The Ottawa Health Research Institute, and the University of Montreal, School of Optometry. The RHA uses proprietary optics and software to create the most precise images of the interior of the eye. These images contain a much greater range of light wavelengths compared to standard instruments and are proving to be a powerful tool for early detection of disease and for disease management. To make the RHA device an even more powerful tool, Annidis is investigating advanced image-processing and artificial intelligence algorithms that can help doctors analyze the RHA retinal images of their patients. This is the ultimate goal of the NSERC ARD II with Algonquin College. Such a system would save doctor time and greatly enhance the early-detection and tracking of patient diseases. In addition to advancing the general science of ophthalmology, the project will add an exciting new functionality to Annidis' flagship RHA product and thus strengthen the company's position in the market.
