Bioz Agri has developed a process for extracting high purity lignin from wood products. It is felt that the Bioz Agri Lignin (BAL) may be a good candidate feedstock for the formation of carbon fibres. However, there are several challenges posed by the fibre formation that the BAL product developers must overcome. The University of British Columbia (UBC) has a wide range of electrospinning facilities in Advanced Materials and Process Engineering Laboratory (AFML). By combining the expertise of UBC AFML staff and nanofibre processing facility we can reduce the design cycle time and improve the level of innovation. In this program, we propose to combine Bioz Agri's bio-refinery technology with the know-how and capabilities in fibrous materials in AFML at UBC to explore the feasibility of lignin as a raw material for carbon fibre production
