The development of high performance coatings and lubricants is of paramount technological and economic
relevance. There are many common failure mechanisms [1] associated with conventional coatings used for
shaft sealing of abrasive pumps. When selecting and designing a lubricant different factors should be
considered, as the structure and composition, the thickness of the coating and the operating conditions -
velocity, temperature, pressure and environment [5].
It has been shown that the friction and wear between layers of nano-structured coated materials are ultra-low.
Kamloops Precision Machining (KPM) Ltd. serves the mining industry with products that reduce the
operating costs for handling abrasive materials. The company's problem is to produce an advanced shaft sealing
system for use in high speeds, high pressure and abrasive environments which poses low coefficient of friction,
high lubricity, high hardness and very high bond strength.
The main objective of this project is the selection, testing and preliminary design of ultra low coefficient
lubricants with high lubricity, high hardness and very high bond strength and reduced wear. The lubricants
will be used for an advanced shaft sleeve design for sealing applications. Recommendations regarding the
efficacy and performances of different lubricants will be given.
The results of this project will reduce the pump seal failures, therefore the costs associated with these failures
and the escape of potentially harmful fluids to the environment. The high performance lubricants could be used
for a large number of industrial applications involving high surface speed, high system head and high abrasion,
which have been beyond current capabilities.
