The Actlabs Group of Companies provides contract analytical services covering all aspects of analysis from academic research applications to routine quality control functions for a wide range of industries. As needs of clients for superior yet cost effective analytical data and customer service are ever increasing, Actlabs is exploring means to enhance the detection capabilities of its Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) instruments, which are used extensively for geological and environmental applications. Recent advances by the Beauchemin research group in improving the sample introduction system efficiency in Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICPOES) via various heating approaches of the sample introduction system has led to the reduction of noise measured at the detector, allowing for the
reduction of the detection limit in their ICPOES studies. The purpose of this Engage project is to research the effectiveness of these methods for ICPMS, which would allow for an improved service offering as well as increasing the useful lifetime of Actlabs existing ICPMS instruments, resulting in reduced costs and reduced pricing for mining clients that are trying to develop and operate their projects under difficult financing conditions. The project will assist Actlabs to fulfill its mission to maintain its position as an industry leader and to stay globally competitive. The project will benefit Canada as Actlabs is a Canadian company with 12 locations in Canada, as well as the mining and environmental industries.
