Bunt & Associates is a Canadian transportation planning and engineering company whose work increasingly involves designing urban infrastructure to accommodate active transportation modes such as cycling. The company requires up to date information on the safety of cycling-specific infrastructure, especially where it intersects vehicle or pedestrian facilities, for Metro Vancouver. However, it is estimated that only 30% of incidents involving bikes and vehicles are reported, and other bike incidents are rarely reported. To overcome this gap in cycling safety data, Bunt & Associates is proposing a new partnership with Dr. Trisalyn Nelson of the Spatial Pattern Analysis and Research (SPAR) Lab at the University of Victoria. Dr. Nelson and the SPAR lab have developed a website to capture cycling incidents, BikeMaps.org, through volunteered geographic data. Mapping by citizens in Metro Vancouver is already underway on BikeMaps.org, but could use some additional promotion to increase participation. The proposed research project will use the citizen data collected on BikeMaps.org to answer specific questions on the design of cycling infrastructure. This will include using spatial analysis tools to identify hotspots of cycling risk for Metro Vancouver. In addition, the often overlooked crashes between bikes, bikes and pedestrians, and bikes and infrastructure will be examined.
