Developments in technologies, such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and remote sensing, have improved geographic data collection and storage. As a result, it is increasingly common for spatially explicit environmental data to have fine-spatial detail, cover large areas, and include multiple time periods. The use of spatially explicit data for addressing critical environmental research questions is limited by a lack of methods for spatial-temporal analysis. Many approaches are available to investigate spatial trends or time series, but few approaches offer the ability to simultaneously consider space and time. Given that many critical environmental issues are associated with change, the ability to characterize space-time trends in environmental processes is vital.
