CarbonCure Technologies has shown that concrete products (analogous to masonry blocks) produced with exposure to CO2 in the fresh or early hydration state benefit from improved strength, reduced water absorption, improved resistance to chloride permeability, and improved freeze-thaw performance. Most importantly, carbon dioxide absorption into the concrete permanently sequesters CO2 and allows the development of sustainable "green" building products with improved performance. In this project, CarbonCure Technologies (CCT) will investigate extending this technology to ready mixed concrete. CCT will arrange for industrial trials of their process at specific concrete plant locations in Toronto. CCT personnel will also work with University of Toronto researchers to cast specific test specimens for the various durability tests. The concrete specimens will be transported to the University of Toronto where they will be evaluated and analyzed using both standard and new, non-standard durability test methods. In addition, the process will be simulated in the laboratory to cast small scale specimens for use in some of the microscopic analysis. The results of this research will help CarbonCure Technologies better understand the mechanisms of improvements afforded by their CO2 process and allow them to demonstrate the benefits to their potential industrial clients.
