Using an Engage grant we have developed a multi-platform Graphical User Interface (GUI) framework for
active learning of elementary mathematics, and have demonstrated its use through a prototype implementation.
The motivation for this project comes from the timely importance of the resulting learning tool and its potential
success. According to the Journal of Instructional Research, "educators across the country struggle to create
engaging, motivating learning environments for their Net Gen students. These learners expect instant
gratification that traditional lectures do not provide." Our learning tool is being designed to meet the needs of
Net Gen students. Not only are we constantly analysing, personalizing and calculating the next best step to
move student learning forward, but we are also planning to develop an innovative GUI that speaks to Net Gen
learners. While most software based learning systems force users to adjust to the software, our learning
software suite will have a competitive edge as it will adapt, engage, motivate, and tailor itself to the learning
needs of each user. Using an Engage Plus grant, we would like to complete the project with additional features
such as advanced games, and running the the GUI on multilingual platforms.
Net Gen
