Prediction of evaporation from soil is an integral component of the water balance and performance of several
important environmental engineering applications, including designing soil covers for restoration of large
waste deposits or brown fields, estimating the dewatering rate of waste slurries (such as mine tailings), to
altering soils or irrigation scheduling to minimize the severity of drought. Accurate prediction remains
challenging due to the complexity of the physics at the soil surface. This project compares and contrasts a
number of computer models used to predict evaporation, to each other and with new high quality data, to
recommend guidelines for accurate use and improvement of such models.
