In this OCE VIP I and NSERC Engage project, Shelburne Wood Protection Ltd. (SWPL) will partner with the University of
Toronto's researcher to develop a new treated wood products line targeting the decking market. The research project will
be focused on investigation of treatment chemical and colour pigment penetration and retention in lumber of Canadian
refractory wood species as well as their correlation with the final product durability and UV stability. The industryacademic
team will also explore glass blastering and end sealant as surface pretreatment processes for the
wood materials for enhanced chemical and colour pigment penetration and retention in the final products. If the
new product line is successful, it can significantly help maintain SWPL and its customers competitive edge in the
large decking market. It will also significantly increase SWPLs production capacity, creating 20 new jobs in Ontario. The
HQP trained by the project has the potential to gain first hand industrial experience in the treated wood sector and be
exposed to leading edge sciences in the cross disciplinary area of preservative and pigment chemistry and material
sciences.
