英文摘要
Fireproofing wood coatings are used as part of passive fire protection system to ensure building safety. With increased global construction activities, higher desire to use low-carbon impact wood-based materials, and more stringent fire code requirements, the market for fireproofing wood coatings is forecasted to grow at a rapid pace in the near future. Recently, we have developed a novel synthesis method that uses non-toxic vanillin biomolecule and environmentally-friendly phosphorous containing fire-retardant to make intumescent fire-retardant formaldehyde-free coatings for the protection of wood from fire. Building on the past highly promising results , we propose to conduct further developmental work by performing larger batch synthesis, carrying out industry required ASTM fire performance test, and adding UV curing functionality in this NSERC Phase 1 I2I project. Results obtained from this I2I project will make the technology more attractive to companies for commercialization. Success in bringing these products to market will contribute to expanding Canada's manufacturing and chemical sectors, increase Canada's competitiveness, and provide jobs for our highly qualified graduate students. Using renewable bio-derived feedstock to replace petroleum-derived chemicals will also bring additional environmental benefits to Canada. Moreover, these novel high-performance environmentally-friendly intumescent fire-retardant coatings will help Canadian wood producers to develop new value-added fireproofing wood products to further grow their market shares in the bioeconomy.
