英文摘要
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the next step in the global communications network in which objects are connected to the Internet and can communicate with each other or with a remote computer of electronic device. It is estimated that over 100 billion machine-to-machine (M2M) enabled devices are being shipped globally each year. Beyond the remote monitoring aspects, IoT systems often support remote control as well. The connectivity between smart devices and the user interface is typically done through a wired or wireless infrastructure. As an example, lots of smart devices (e.g. smart cars) have embedded 3G or 4G modems to enable remote access. However, in some applications the devices are deployed in remote areas where no infrastructure is available (e.g., agriculture farms, wind farms). Nutaq offers a connectivity solution for remote areas based on TV white space (TVWS). TVWS refers to TV channel frequencies that are vacant at a certain geographical location, i.e., not used by any terrestrial television broadcast services. A particular application is the connection of Non Destructive Test (NDT) devices placed in the field. There is currently no solution for that. The project will include the use Nutaq's equipment to perform field modelization, evaluation and demonstrations of the technology. The project would also include the use of a sophisticated channel simulation tools developed by Laval University. These tests will enable Nutaq and its partner to determine the potential coverage of their solution in real field locations where NDT devices have been/will be deployed; representative locations will be provided by Nutaq and its partner. Different channel models, frequencies, power levels and antennas will be considered. With this research project, Nutaq will be able to provide the Canadian industry with a complete solution to connect remote devices to the Internet, even where there is no infrastructure in place. Although the focus of the proposed project is NDT, the results of this research could easily be extrapolated to other field of application (agriculture, mining, energy) that would benefit from low cost and low power radio access over extended distances.
