In recent decades, the avionics industry has seen important development both in terms of hardware and software for many different applications like airplane control, radar and collision avoidance, and flight support systems. Similar technologies are deployed on the ground for simulating avionics systems for pilot training as well as system design. Modern simulation systems are composed of multiple individual simulators that run concurrently on disparate computing platforms. This way, the simulation is distributed across smaller computers, reducing the need for a powerful single computer. The main goal of this project is to develop architecture-centric methods for integrating Marinvent simulators into a larger network simulator using the High-Level Architecture (HLA) standard. The long term is to extend this architecture to support other simulators including the ERAU (Embry-Riddle Aeronautic University) and NASA simulators. The resulting simulation network will enable Marinvent and its Canadian and U.S.based partners to conduct collaborative R&D that is expected to yield further technological advancements. This project will provide solid ground work for many other future research projects such as the connection of Marinvent simulators to other (and heterogeneous) simulators. Additional research is expected in the area of performance analysis of network of simulators. This is particularly important for avionic systems, which are subject to hard real-time constraints. Moreover, network of simulators provide new research opportunities in numerous areas including tracing and monitoring, debugging of simulation scenarios on large simulation networks, and anomaly detection. Finally, we believe that this project and subsequent projects will provide training to many excellent students in the area of aerospace with a focus on simulation systems, software architecture, and performance analysis of aerospace systems.
