The goal of this project is to conduct a preliminary evaluation of transport-aware cameras for vein imaging and for quantitative measurement of blood oxygenation. Transport-aware cameras were developed by PI Kutulakos' research group over the last three years and have the unique ability to generate a live video stream with all surface reflections blocked. This ability offers improved sub-surface imaging of translucent media such as skin, and holds the promise of significantly improving the performance of vein imaging systems (i.e., higher contrast, higher spatial resolution, higher signal-to-noise ratio). The project will explore this technology's potential through a collaboration with researchers from Christie Medical Holdings, who are leaders on building vein illumination systems. Its specific aims are to (1) build a transport-aware prototype tuned to the task of vein illumination and (2) perform an initial feasibility study of using it for blood oxygenation and vein depth measurements in specially-designed "phantom" objects.
