SLC Applied Research, and Neverfrost Inc. of Kitchener Ontario have received an award from the Natural
Sciences and Engineering Council (NSERC) to test their proprietary hydrophobic films on solar panels to
characterize their snow and frost shedding properties.
Neverfrost Inc of Kitchener Ontario has developed a film that utilizes nanotechnology to prevent the surface
area of glass from reaching temperatures low enough to develop condensation freezes and turn into frost. This
frost, when formed on solar panels, accumulates snow and restricts the energy production of the panels. This
film is currently being applied to automotive windshields to prevent frost buildup and the company has made
strategic commercial partnerships with the long-haul trucking industry to reduce the risks associated with frost
build-up on trans-climate journeys.
Neverfrost and St. Lawrence College plan to investigate three of the different films currently being produced by
the company.
This project offers St. Lawrence College students in the Energy Systems Engineering Technology (ESET)
programs a unique opportunity to combine their education with a practical application.
