Some medical, dental, and cosmetics instruments are difficult to sterilize because they cannot withstand the high temperatures used in traditional sterilizers. They are disinfected using chemicals, but this process is prone to error if not carefully managed and this can lead to transmission of disease. This project will assist a company with the optimization of a new technology that combines physical and chemical sterilization, namely ultrasonics and ozone, in an automated and simple to use device. The combination of ultrasound and ozone has been identified in literature, but to date no effective commercial equipment has been deployed due to difficulties in design and operation. Devis Technologies has a novel design that shows significant promise, but needs further investigation to identify the best configuration and operating conditions, and this will be the focus of the project. This equipment could eventually be used to sterilize various instruments in a way that is safe, effective, and requires minimal operator training and experience. The market for medical, dental and cosmetics offices numbers in the many thousands, so this innovation has the potential for significant impact and growth.
