Microbonds Inc has developed a proprietary Thermoplating (TM) technology that can produce various metal films on surfaces. One of the metal films contains silver, which has been known to have antimicrobial properties in other applications. The goal of this work is to analyze the antimicrobial effectiveness of silver films on different supporting materials, and to identify the factors that lead to the best performance. The effects of surface wear and cleaning will be tested to determine if the films lose their antimicrobial properties over time.
Films with good antimicrobial performance may have significant applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries where routine cleaning and disinfection can be difficult. Surfaces treated with these films would be less susceptible to contamination and the transmission of food-borne illnesses, for example. This project will help the company with proof of concept and developing new markets for their technology.
