Assessing the potential toxicity of contaminants represents an ongoing challenge, in particular when assessing
complex mixtures from environmental samples (soil, groundwater). Interprovincial Cooperative Limited
(IPCO) is currently facing this challenge with an agricultural chemicals formulation and packaging facility in
Winnipeg. Testing of groundwater and soil at this site has revealed detected several pesticides at concentrations
greater than national guideline levels. This grant will use bioanalytical tools (in vitro assays using mammalian
cell lines) to assess the potential toxicity of soil and groundwater collected from the site and provide a rapid
and realistic assessment of potential human health hazard. At the conclusion of this project, IPCO will have
data on the potential human toxicity of pesticide mixtures found in contaminated soil and groundwater as well
as preliminary map of spatial differences in the toxicity across site. This project will allow us to develop and
apply in vitro bioassay tools to assess a contaminated site of economic importance to Canada.
