Northwest Hydraulic Consultants (NHC) is seeking to improve their testing tank facility in order to provide a first class research centre for marine renewable energy devices. Chief among these are Wave Energy Conversion (WEC) devices, often cited as an important entry in Canadas future portfolio of renewable energy solutions. For this reason, NHC is eager to incorporate a wavemaker device into their existing flume testing tank that will provide an excellent opportunity to assess a variety of designs in a controlled environmental setting, providing a high quality experimental wave tank facility for small scale energy devices. The main goal of this project is to design a wavemaker system that can reproduce regular, polychromatic, as well as irregular waves in a nominally 1D wave train in the tank. In addition, passive or active wave absorption methods will be implemented to minimize reflected waves. The provision of a high quality wave making facility in Vancouver would give easier access to the development of West Coast projects, supporting and strengthening Canada's abilities to develop marine renewable energy and renew coastal infrastructure in the face of climate change.
