A Scalable Utility Meter Data Management System

SpryPoint is a Charlottetown-based company that builds innovative software for the utility industry. With a client base reaching across North America, SpryPoint helps electric, natural gas, water, and wastewater utilities achieve operational efficiencies to reduce costs and improve customer service. Many utilities from Summerside to San Diego have implemented smart meter technology to collect meter data at intervals up to every 5 minutes, resulting in the accumulation of huge sets of reading data - often over 100,000 data points per meter per year, for tens of thousands of meters. While SpryPoint helps many utilities extract value from this data, large-scale analysis poses challenges in mining such large quantities of data. The information contained in these large data sets - usage patterns, peaks, and trends - can have tremendous positive impact on energy conservation and efficiency, policy building, and customer service. In this project, we will work with SpryPoint, our industry partner, collaboratively to study energy consumption data. Specifically, we attempt to develop a scalable utility meter data management system capable of analyzing and predicting energy consumption.
