Extraction, isolation and identification of terpenophenols for drug standardization in a medicinal plant

The Problem: First Access Medical plans to produce high-quality medicinal plant extracts to treat patients suffering from a variety of health issues, including pain, inflammation and tissue loss in arthritis. Plant-based prescriptions and even extracts from medicinal plant tissues contain a diversity of pharmaceutically relevant compounds including terpenophenols that must be extracted, isolated and identified for drug standardization, and to evaluate clinical applications. Significance of the Problem: Unless the constituent terpenophenols can be extracted, isolated, identified and evaluated at precise doses, attribution of medicinal activity to specific compounds in the treatment of particular diseases and the production of useful biopharmaceuticals will be difficult. Thus, there is an urgent need to establish standard operating procedures (SOP) for the extraction and isolation of terpenophenols compounds from plant tissues and extracts. Solutions Proposed: Working under a federally issued research license at Ryerson University, we will develop SOPs for the extraction and isolation of terpenophenols from the leaf, stem and floral tissues of a non-psychoactive, medicinal plant cultivars to determine a reliable method of extracting and identifying these compounds.
