Development of generalized MIMO channel models

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology is a key enabler for high-speed wireless communications. Modelling techniques that can capture the realistic propagation models and transmission methods for this technology are essential for design and optimization of modern wireless and mobile communications systems. Viavi Solutions Canada Inc., the industry partner in this project, develops mobile network service test equipments for operators/service providers for optimizing the operation and performance of their networks. Currently, Viavi's load test equipments do not use proper channel models for different MIMO configurations under realistic propagation scenarios. The objective of this research project is to develop low-complexity realistic MIMO channel models which can be used by these equipments for load testing. A simulation platform will be developed to assess the performances of different channel models. This study will provide Viavi with recommendations on MIMO channel models and Viavi will then incorporate this those into their high capacity mobile emulation products.
