MetaOptima has designed and developed MoleScopeTM that attaches to a smartphone or tablet, and captures high-quality 2D microscopic images for remote review by dermatologists. The accompanying app provides analysis of the 2D images and allows monitoring skin lesions over time, to help identify skin cancer, the most common cancer in North America. There are no other dermoscopes within the price range suitable for patient use as a self-screening device. We wish to extend the 2D imaging into a 3D platform using off-the-shelf 3D cameras to perform monitoring of many more skin conditions, building on the archiving and monitoring software we have already developed for 2D dermoscopic imaging. This 3D imaging platform with optimization for mobile 3D imaging will be the first cloud based full-body imaging system for skin cancer diagnosis. Also, 3D imaging will enable new applications such as monitoring treatment for several skin conditions such as acne, eczema and wounds. Other cosmetic applications include measuring wrinkles, outcomes of cosmetic surgery, and hair loss. Working with MetaOptima Inc., this proposal aims to engage and access the PI's expertise in 3D graphics, to develop software which can be used for acquiring and processing 3D images on a smartphone or tablet.
