Cancer is a major public health problem. Currently, one in four deaths in the United States and Canada is due to cancer. Modern bioorganic and medicinal chemistry concepts aim at the development of novel tool to detect and treat cancer more efficiently. The proposed research project deals with the development of novel radiochemistry concepts and the design and synthesis of novel radiolabeled compounds to fulfill the promise of molecular imaging and targeted radiotherapy to improve patient care. The project will explore so-called click chemistry as highly innovative chemistry tool for the development of radiolabeled compounds for applications in medical research and mediacal practice. The term click chemistry defines a powerful set of chemical reactions to create heteroatom C-X-C links enabling the rapid, selective and high-yielding labeling of biomolecules. The proposed research project has the potential to open new avenues for improved diagnosis and therapy of human diseases, and to support the process of drug development. The project represents an innovative platform for the development and application of novel radiopharmaceuticals to enhance patient care.
