With the explosive growth of the wireless communication industry over the past three decades, wireless systems and networks are having an increasingly significant ecological impact. Energy consumption of wireless communication devices is growing at a staggering rate. Widespread wireless transmitters are generating more and more electromagnetic (EM) pollution to the environment. While striving to meet the continuously growing demand for ubiquitous wireless connectivity, current and future wireless systems must become more environmentally friendly. The long-term goal of the proposed research program is to develop effective enabling techniques for green wireless communications. These techniques will help future wireless systems deliver high quality services with minimum energy consumption and the least possible EM emission. Noting that the environmental impact of wireless transmission, i.e. EM emission, plays an essential role in harmonizing different competing design objectives, we will adopt a unique environmentally conscious approach for the design and analysis of next generation wireless transmission techniques. Specifically, the negative environmental impact of EM pollution and interference will be taken into account in the development of highly spectral efficient transmission schemes. The proposed research program follows three themes: I) develop effective performance metrics for wireless system analysis with consideration of environmental impact; II) analyze and design efficient multi-antenna transmission schemes to explore full throughput enhancement/energy saving potential of large-scale antenna systems; III) develop highly agile cognitive wireless systems to exploit spatial/temporal spectrum opportunities with minimal additional overhead and minimal or no energy consumption increase. The successful completion of the proposed research program will result in the production of several novel and efficient transmission schemes for different application scenarios. These transmission schemes together with their performance and efficiency quantification will significantly advance the technology evolution toward a green and sustainable wireless paradigm.
