Providing high speed connection to moving cars driving through remote area with limited infrastructure represents a promising application area for future satellite communication industry. One of the key technical challenges is to develop low-profile cost-effective high performance antennas for SOTM (Satcom-On-The-Move) terminals. Existing solutions typically entails high implementation complexity, which limits their application to standard commercial cars. In this research project, we propose to develop effective and low-complexity solutions for SOTM antennas. The objective is to achieve comparable link performance with conventional parabolic reflection antennas with much lower profile and no mechanical tracking parts. We plan to explore the recent advanced in the area of multiple antenna transmission and receiver technologies, massive MIMO technologies more specifically, to address this challenging design problem. The proposed approach will adaptively utilize a large number of antenna elements based on their instantaneous channel state information, which has the potential to lead to much improved performance than previously proposed phased array antennas. The technology developed from the proposed research program will be directly applied to Canadian private sector and enhance the competition advantage of Canadian company in the field of mobile satellite antennas.
