An outstanding challenge in quantum optics is to coherently couple a solid-state spin to single photons. Such a single-quantum light-matter interface forms a critical resource for long distance quantum cryptography and networked quantum computation architectures. A particularly promising approach exploits a defect in diamond – the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center – whose optical transitions can mediate interactions between photons and long-lived electronic and nuclear spins. By placing the defect inside an optical resonator, these interactions can be strongly enhanced, in principle even into the quantum-coherent regime.
