Advances in wireline and wireless high-bandwidth Internet connectivity are being driven by the rising demand for cloud and social media services across private and public, personal, and professional sectors. Enabled by evermore powerful data centers, the Internet of Things is producing an explosive increase in this demand that can only be met by continued innovation in optical communication systems, wireless communications, and the requisite enabling device technologies. Both optical and wireless communication systems, operating in concert with one another, are the essential ingredients that power the growth of innovative, transformative Internet-based products and services, many of which are unanticipated.
