Electrochemical reactions are those reactions either caused or accompanied by the transfer of an electric current and most often involve the transfer of electrons, i.e. electrical current, between two substances; one a solid and the other a liquid. An electrochemical reaction usually is the combination of two different types of reactions; one an oxidation reaction which produces electrons and one a cathodic reaction that consumes the electrons. The oxidation reactions occur on an anode electrode and the reduction reactions occur on a cathodic electrode. The electrode of the reaction of interest is usually refereed to as the working electrode and the other electrode is refereed to as the counter electrode. Examples of the electrochemical reactions are electro-deposition of metals such as copper, electro-dissolution of minerals and metals such as corrosion of steel, and cementation (i.e. precipitation of a more noble metal such as gold by sacrificing a less noble metal such as zinc).
