A Scintillation Counter is required to perform highly sensitive and specific quantification and detection of radioisotopes for analytical methods in a variety of biological applications for 6 FAES researchers. Experiments using radioisotopes and thus requiring a scintillation counter are longstanding and essential tools in life sciences. We request support for an on-campus, bench-top Scintillation Counter platform to replace 2 older non-functioning counters and to support research focused on arctic microbiology ecology and biodiversity, environmental change impacting Arctic wildlife, soil sciences and agro-ecosystems, plant-insect interactions, plant genomics and biotechnology, and identifying new research tools to study gene regulation in trypanosomatid pathogens. Our team is composed of internationally recognized, established leaders in their areas representing 3 diverse departments in the FAES. The research team possesses wide-ranging scientific interests and the research resources to permit a broad range of cutting-edge research programs (including NSERC/CRC funded), discovering fundamental knowledge applicable to real world problems. Access to a Scintillation Counter platform is urgently need and will both maintain and establish new research collaborations at the national and international levels in academia, government, and industry, thus leading to a highly enriched, multidisciplinary training environment for HQP. It is anticipated that ~25-30 HQP per year will utilize the scintillation counter which will be critical to both successful and timely completion of the research projects and ensuring that they are able to provide such expertise to future employers, including academia, government and non-governmental agencies, and in industry.
